GOSPEL in BUNRAKU DVD
Exotic sights and sounds breathe new life into the greatest story.
The life of Jesus depicted through Bunraku
Jesus’ birth, resurrection, and the stories in between have been brought to life like never before on Japan’s bunraku puppet theatre stage. Japanese craftsmanship and attention to detail are on display in the faces and costumes of Jesus, Mary and other characters, and events such as the resurrection of Jairus’ daughter unfold with an elegant realism only achieved by bunraku’s highly-trained performers. The harmony of the technical, intricate movements transforms the puppets’ and puppeteers’ actions into a graceful display of the Bible’s most miraculous and dramatic stories, enhanced by the otherworldly feel of accompanying shamisen music and on-stage voice actors. Though the stories are familiar, the experience will most certainly have you viewing the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in a new light.
Bunraku is the traditional puppet theater of Japan, an outstanding stage art of which Japan can be very proud. Bunraku’s world renown stems not only from its high-quality artistic technique, but also from the high level of its “joruri music” and the unique nature of manipulating the puppets ― each puppet requires three puppeteers to bring it to life.
